The Chapter Library

The historical chapter library is inseparably linked to the Chapter Museum. It is unique to North Rhine-Westphalia – both in terms of the collection of works as well as their presentation on lecterns that were constructed based on models from the Middle Ages. For all lovers of book art as well as for all scientific researchers, the chapter library represents a veritable treasure trove.

The history of the Xanten chapter library can be retraced to the 14th century. Documents are preserved that substantiate the construction of a “Liberaria” for the school of the Victor's chapter. Fromt he first days the librarian office got held by the chapter's canons, who often operated literary or scientific, e.g., Stephan Vinandus Pighius (1520 - 1604) and Cornelis de Pauw (1739 - 1799).

The valuable book stock at the Xanten chapter library has experienced a changeful history. Visitors are more than welcome to discover more informations about this history during special tours.

Due to the support of the North Rhine-Westphalian foundation, the collection of books got preserved in the past years to make them usable.

Guided Tours

The chapter library can only be visited within the scope of guided tours. The old books are simply too sensitive that they can be made available to the public on an ongoing basis. In one of the museum’s rooms there are particularly valuable and elaborately designed books and manuscripts on display.
