Chapter Archive

The Chapter Archive in Xanten is one of the most significant archives in the Rhineland. More than 5000 deeds and several thousand records enable unique insight into the history of the Lower Rhineland and beyond its borders. This does not only include church-related aspects, but also political, economic and social developments.

The archived records begin shortly after 1100 and extend beyond the period of secularisation in 1802 through to the present.

Manuscripts, administrative records and accounts, as well as other documents visualise the diverse operations of the Victor chapter, the construction of the collegiate church and the administration of the extensive estates. They substantiate the canons’ connection to significant political and ecclesiastical persons during the various eras.

Using the records of the chapter archive can only be arranged by appointment. In the Chapter Museum several original deeds and manuscripts are on display – both in the permanent exhibition as well as in the alternating special exhibitions.

Upon prior arrangement with the museum‘s director, scientists and researchers can study single records in the reading room. Please view our picture gallery for selected treasures from our archives!
